Вскоре появилась и торговля, а значит, масштабы перевозки возросли многократно.
Большие грузовики со стальными полуприцепами и прицепами, забитыми бревнами, снуют по всем дорогам Европы большую часть года. Сегодня увидеть лесовоз — это такое же «знаменательное» событие, как вдох или моргание. Удивит разве что встреча с таким грузовиком где-нибудь в центре, какого-то города.
Первая промышленная революция случилась в Англии XVIII века. Палка о двух концах ударила сразу обоими. Появление мануфактур в больших городах означало потребность в рабочей силе. Массовое переселение из деревень в первые промышленные города, в свою очередь, означало, что мануфактуры обеспечивались неквалифицированными сотрудниками, а значит, необходимо было стандартизировать производства. Вслед за Англией промышленная революция охватила весь мир, чему, безусловно, способствовало огромное число британских колоний по всему земному шару. Ну а массовая транспортировка леса, как и всех других товаров, осуществлялась уже не только по морским путям сообщения, но и через океан.
По большому счету, сегодняшний облик транспортировки леса сформировался в начале девятнадцатого столетия. Железнодорожные составы и грузовики пришли в мир после промышленной революции, а вот речные, морские и океанские сообщения используются уже несколько тысячелетий. Разумеется, технологии на месте не стоят. Суда, поезда и автомобили двигаются все быстрее и вмещают все больше грузов, а это значит, что древесина, казалось бы, должна становиться все «ближе и доступнее».

Following England, the Industrial Revolution swept the world, helped, of course, by the huge number of British colonies around the globe. And the massive transport of timber, like all other goods, was no longer only by sea, but also across the ocean.
Overall, the current process of timber transportation was formed at the beginning of the 19th century. While trains and trucks were born after the Industrial Revolution, transportation by sea has been around after the Industrial Revolution, river, sea, and ocean transportation has been around for thousands of years. Of course, technology has not stood still. Ships, trains, and automobiles are moving faster and carrying more and more cargo, which means that timber should seem to be getting «closer and more accessible.
