С Лионом связана деятельность одного из крупнейших типографов-гуманистов XVI в. Этьенна Доле. Выходец из плебейской среды, Доле окончил Падуанский университет. В начале 30-х годов он пребывал в Венеции, где завершил свое образование. В 1532 г. Доле поселился в Тулузе. В 1534 г. он был вынужден из-за преследований переселиться в Лион. Поступив корректором в типографию Грифиуса, Доле сближается с выдающимися гуманистами — Бюде, Рабле, Деперье, Маре и др. В октябре 1534 г. он уехал в Париж за разрешением напечатать у Грифиуса «Комментарии к латинскому языку». В 1538 г. Доле устроил в Лионе собственную типографию. В руках типографа-гуманиста книгопечатание служило средством распространения знаний и просвещения, пропаганде передовых идей. «Я буду безжалостно отвергать негодные сочинения презренных бумагомарателей, позорящих наше время», — писал Доле. Из его типографии вышло ок. 70 книг, в том числе сочинения Рабле, Маре, Эразма Роттердамского, Кальвина, Софокла, Галена, Теренция, Цицерона, Вергилия и других авторов. Доле выпустил 15 собственных сочинений исторического и филологического характера. Данная типография существует до сих пор, и носит имя своего основателя. К международному дню дарения книг, который отмечается 14 февраля, руководство приняло решение выпустить серию подарочных книг, а для этого необходимо доставить в Лион партию бумаги.

In October 1534 he left for Paris to get permission to print «Commentaries on the Latin Language» from Griffius. In 1538, Dole created his own printing house in Lyon. In the hands of a humanist typographer, typography served as a means of disseminating knowledge and enlightenment, promoting advanced ideas. «I will mercilessly reject the worthless writings of despicable scribblers that dishonor our time,» Dole wrote. About 70 books were published from his printing house, including works by Rabelais, Mare, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Calvin, Sophocles, Galen, Terence, Cicero, Virgil and other authors. Dole released 15 of his own works of a historical and philological nature. This printing house still exists, and bears the name of its founder.
