On June 12, 1849, the American Patent Office granted Lewis Haslett the first patent for a gas mask device. The invention was called the «Lung Protector» and consisted of a block with inhalation-exhalation valves and a felt filter connected directly or through a tube to this block. The latter could be attached to the nose or mouth.
Active work on improving the means of protecting the respiratory organs of a person began during the First World War, when the first gas attack was carried out in April 1915. At that time, gauze masks impregnated with a special solution were issued to protect against gases. However, they turned out to be an unreliable remedy.
Then the outstanding Russian chemist Nikolai Zelinsky came up with the idea to use coal for protection from gases. Through experimental research, he was able to establish that heat-treated birch charcoal reliably absorbed toxic substances. Based on his findings, engineer E. Kummant created a rubber mask that tightly fitted the face and ensured the flow of breathing air through the filter element. It took four months to make such a gas mask.
In the modern world, filtering gas masks are used to protect the respiratory system, eyes, as well as the skin of the face from vapour and gaseous harmful impurities and aerosols, smoke and other toxic substances, purifying the polluted air entering the space under the mask.
Recently, scientists have developed a new gas mask to protect against gases and dust in confined spaces. The tests will take place in the mine of a quarry of the city Hiorthhamn, and for testing, it is necessary to deliver a batch of dynamite to this quarry.
